"Latter Days" Makes Me Believe in Romance
Strap yourselves in, boys and girls. I'm going to wax poetic about another "gay-themed" motion picture.
If you've read this blog for any length of time, you already know how enamored I became (not quite, but almost, obsessed) with Brokeback Mountain. Well, I'm having the same reaction to the romantic drama Latter Days, from Sweet Home Alabama writer/director C. Jay Cox.
Steve Sandvoss stars as Mormon missionary Elder Aaron Davis, green to L.A. and homesick for his native Idaho. He runs into neighbor Christian (Wes Pamsey) a promiscuous, openly gay West Hollywood party boy, who makes a bet with his co-workers that he can bed the hunky, blond Latter Day Saint. Opposites attract and set into motion frightening consequences and tearful challenges. The top-notch cast also includes Mary Kay Place, the always-delightful Jacquelline Bisset and Buffy alum Amber Benson (the sweetest actress I've ever met.)
This is a film that will make you believe love is still possible in the gay subculture. I won't spoil any of the story, but have tissues on hand for the ending. The DVD has some nice features, including commentary from the writer/director and stars and a terrific featurette on the making of the film.
Go. Buy it. Get here from TLA Releasing.
